I recently gave a Pro D workshop for teachers at my school on searching. Here are some tips I found at Google to help you better use Google and it's search features.
When searching for a proper name or something specific use quotes to encapsulate the search terms for example “David McCristall”. Use the “+” and “–“ keys to narrow your search or expand it.
If you are looking for something like “Social Responsibility” then narrow your searches by using commands such as:
Site:
Site:edu or Site:bc,ca will narrow your search to only Education or BC Websites
ex. “Social Responsibility” site:edu
Filetype:
If you are looking for a specific document type on “Social Responsibility” then you could type in: “Social Responsibility” site:edu filetype:pdf
and this search will give you PDF documents only
Other useful commands in Google are:
Define “ “
This feature will give you the definition of a word.
Ex. Define “Social Responsibility”
Conversions
To convert from one unit to another, use the term “in”
Ex. 1 gallon in litres
Movies:
Forget what the movies name was type movie: then a few key words.
Ex. Movie: Russian submarine Sean Connery
Calculations
Type in the Math equation, click search and Google does the Math for you
Ex. 5+3*3 will give a result of 14
